Estimation of the cloud’s characteristics is very important for science atmosphere. This study applies digital and visual interpretation to determine the cloud’s characteristics in Jakarta using satellite remote sensing data. The data for this research was obtained from natural resource sensing satellite, Landsat 8 OLI / TIRS with data input are the spectral radiance of the satellite imagery visible bands 4 and 5, band 6 as near infrared, and thermal infrared in bands 10 and 11. Interpretation of the cloud using the visible bands 4, 5 and near infrared band 6, while creating the cloud classes using supervised image classification. Thermal infrared band is used to estimate the surface temperature of the clouds and the temperature of the ground beneath the cloud object. Cloud temperature and land surface temperature data can be used to analyze the cloud’s characteristics based on altitude using equation of dry adiabatic lapse rate. Characteristics of the cloud by thickness, volume, and the mass of water contained in the clouds are derived by saturated adiabatic lapse rate equation. After the sample of clouds are classified by the same altitude, further interpretation is done by visual interpretation to determine the cloud’s characteristics based on its forms using a combination of bands 4, 5, and 6 of Landsat 8 OLI. The analysis of the cloud's characteristics using area of Jakarta with January data to represent the rainy season and August to represent the dry season. The results of the characteristics analysis of clouds in Jakarta shows cloud cover during the rainy season is dominated by heterogeneous cloud forms, ranging from low to high clouds. In contrast to the rainy season, cloud cover during the dry season is dominated by homogeneous cloud forms above the area of Jakarta. The characteristics analysis of the cloud cover able to describe the differences of weather conditions between the rainy and dry season in area of Jakarta. Information of cloud cover and the difference in the two seasons in Jakarta can be used as general overview of weather conditions in tropical areas with high evaporation rate and tropical coastal regions. Thorough study can be utilized for the benefit of hydro-meteorological fields such as estimating weather patterns or rainfall patterns of region, as well as early warning against the possibility of hydro-meteorological disasters in the future.
